West-coast-born pianist, Adrian Tsui is an active soloist, chamber musician, private piano teacher, and current student at the University of Toronto. Adrian was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, where he began piano lessons at age five. His piano teachers included Sophia Tan and Winfried Rompf. While still in high school, Adrian received his licentiate diploma in piano performance from the British Columbia Conservatory of Music (LBCM) and the associate diploma in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto (ARCT). Over the years in Vancouver, he has received musical instruction in chamber music and orchestral conducting from faculty members of the VSO School of Music and the Vancouver Academy of Music (VAM) such as Evan Hulbert, Kathleen Allan, and Dr. Chad Heltzel. Currently, Adrian hosts a private studio in downtown Toronto and is studying piano performance at the University of Toronto under the tutelage of Dr. Megan Chang. Furthermore, he has performed in masterclasses given by renown faculty members of University of Toronto such as James Parker of the Gryphon Trio and Lydia Wong. Being an active soloist and chamber musician, Adrian has performed in venues such as Timothy Eaton Church, St. Andrews Church, Immanuel Baptist Church, Shadbolt Centre, and the Bell Performing Arts Centre. Nonetheless, Adrian enjoys giving gratuitous recitals in settings such as retirement homes and hospitals, often with other students of Dr. Megan Chang.
As an advocate of piano ensemble music, Adrian frequently performs with other pianists for duets, trios, quartets, and more. He has recorded several piano duets for The Northwest International Piano Ensemble Competition with partner Bill Lin and currently performs with Joyce Zheng. On Remembrance Day of 2022, Adrian presented his debut recital at St. Andrews Church with Dr. Megan Chang in memory of his late teacher, Winfried and his wife Margaret. The recital consisted of both solo works by Claude Debussy and Sergei Prokofiev and four-hand duet music by Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Ravel.
Despite my youth and my few years of teaching experience, I resonate deeply with my students by using music and the piano as my medium to share and inspire. My philosophy is simple. I believe that showing inspiration and expressing oneself freely at the piano is far more important than worrying about playing every note perfectly. As a student myself, I have come across far too many teachers that cause the students to forget why they decided to start the piano in the first place. My first step for children especially is to plant a seed of love for the piano and instrumental music.
I am offering piano and theory lessons to students of all ages and skill levels. I am operating in downtown Toronto and can teach both online and in-person. Furthermore, for students wanting in-person lessons, I will be operating from the faculty of music at the University of Toronto. I may be able to travel to students but this will depend on each student and their location. Feel free to book a meet and greet or a trial lesson!
